Description
Southern Buttermilk Fried Chicken is a classic dish known for its crispy exterior and juicy, flavorful meat, marinated in buttermilk for tenderness.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 lbs whole chicken, cut into pieces
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the chicken pieces and buttermilk. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
- In another bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Remove chicken from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge in the flour mixture, ensuring an even coating.
- Carefully place the coated chicken pieces in the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry until golden brown and cooked through, about 15-18 minutes, turning occasionally.
- Remove chicken and drain on paper towels. Let rest for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add hot sauce to the buttermilk marinade.
- Ensure the oil temperature is maintained for even cooking.
- Serve with your favorite sides like coleslaw or cornbread.
