- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup milk, warmed
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup pesto or garlic butter for filling
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and eggs. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle. Spread pesto or garlic butter over the dough and sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
- Cut the dough into strips and stack them vertically. Shape the stacked strips into a Christmas tree shape on a baking sheet.
- Brush the top with beaten egg and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
