A delightful German casserole featuring sauerkraut, bacon, and a hint of sweetness from brown sugar.

- 1 can sauerkraut, drained
- 6 slices of bacon, chopped
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 cup shredded cheese (optional)
- 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a skillet, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, sauté the chopped onion until translucent.
- In a large bowl, combine the drained sauerkraut, cooked bacon, sautéed onion, and brown sugar. Mix well.
- If using, add caraway seeds and mix again.
- Transfer the mixture to a greased casserole dish.
- Top with shredded cheese if desired.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and use a plant-based alternative.
- Adjust the amount of brown sugar to taste for desired sweetness.
- Serve with crusty bread for a complete meal.
