Description

A delightful German casserole featuring sauerkraut, bacon, and a hint of sweetness from brown sugar.


Ingredients

  • 1 can sauerkraut, drained
  • 6 slices of bacon, chopped
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté the chopped onion until translucent.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the drained sauerkraut, cooked bacon, sautéed onion, and brown sugar. Mix well.
  5. If using, add caraway seeds and mix again.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a greased casserole dish.
  7. Top with shredded cheese if desired.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until heated through and bubbly.
